Cocooned in the laps of nature, overshadowed by the Dhauladhar ranges with a beautiful view of the hilltops, is the small plateau of Khajjiar, The Mini Switzerland of India.

The picture is of a signboard installed by the Vice-chancellor and Head of Chancery of Switzerland during his 1992 visit. That was when he remarked Khajjiar’s resemblance with the ecosystem and beauty of Switzerland and hence giving it the title of Mini Switzerland.

The picture says that the Switzerland of Himachal Pradesh and bears the exact distance of the Swiss capital, Bern from Khajjiar which is 6194 km.


The vast stretch of green lands, with a lake, placed right in the middle of it. The meadow ends with your eyes trailing to the roots of the dense deodar forest climbing the slopes of the mountains which so tenderly folds Khajjiar in its laps, and makes it one with the Dhauladhar Ranges. The temple is dedicated to Khajji nag, who is the lord of the serpents. A local belief says that the Lord Khajji nag still resides in the lake beside it. A fact, on the other hand, is that this temple and the whole region of Khajjiar was an active part of the ancient Hindu epic, the Mahabharata.

The insides of the temple have idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Haddimba, also has hanging images of the Kauravas with the defeated Pandavas. Another interesting fact is that Khajjiar has some unique trees with multiple shots, one particular tree with 6 shots which is considered as the tree of the Pandavas, five shots for the Five Pandavas and the last one for Draupadi. Also, Kheerganga one of the best spot for trekking and camping near Khajjiar.
